Criterion #1 – Type of Spectrum
There are over 500 compounds in the cannabis plant that all seemingly have therapeutic effects on the body and each other. Thanks to these compounds having different molecular structures, we can often separate them individually from each other. This gives us an astronomical amount of variations. To keep things simple, cannabinoid-based items, such as CBD, are broken down into three main types: full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate.
Full spectrum CBD contains all the cannabinoids and terpenes and is considered to have the greatest entourage effect. The entourage effect is the synergy between various cannabis compounds, and their ability to influence how they interact with the body.
Broad spectrum CBD typically has undetectable amounts of THC, which is nice if you’re sensitive to the psychotropic cannabinoid, but want to take advantage of the entourage effect.
CBD isolates only contain highly concentrated amounts of CBD. These are really nice when you have concerns about THC appearing on drug tests or want a product that only contains compounds with a hefty amount of research backing their safety.
Most people prefer full spectrum CBD.
Criterion #2 – Potency
There are several factors that will affect the optimal amount of CBD you should take. If you’re new to CBD, it’s best to use your body weight when looking to find a good starting dose. Ethanol extraction provides a cheaper, and potentially, easier way to extract, however, drawbacks such as bitter taste and degradation of beneficial compounds have resulted in many CBD producers moving away from it in favor of supercritical CO2 extraction. Pretty much all the brands we reviewed use a CO2 extraction process. But we felt it was important to include this criterion in case you choose to look beyond the 10 brands we reviewed.
Criterion #4 – Source of Hemp
Hemp is a wonderful plant that can do so much to support our health, but due to its phytoremediation properties, it can be an incredibly dirty plant. Like mustard plants, hemp can soak up harmful chemicals from its soil. Great for cleaning up hazardous and contaminated soil, but not so great for our health. As such, it is important to know where the hemp plants used to create your CBD item are coming from.
Additionally, it’s nice to see that the hemp plants were grown in a familiar and close location to you and the manufacturer. Not only will it be easier to find information on the farms and the practices they perform to ensure safety, but it cuts down on travel distances and pollution. All 10 of the reviewed brands source their hemp from the U.S., but not everyone told us about the farms or even the states where they source from.
Criterion #5 – Third-Party Lab Tested
CBD and other cannabinoid-based products are notorious for not containing what they are advertised to contain. Often they contain less CBD and more THC than what’s advertised on the label. And while that’s a problem for all of us, it’s a major concern for those worried about drug tests, their local cannabis laws, or feeling high from their CBD product.
For these reasons and more, it is essential you only buy CBD products that have been independently tested by a third-party lab for purity and potency. To find the results, you should look for the certificate of analysis (COA), which is most often found on the product page.
